This is the Southern Command Network

Do you have any SCN radio recordings?  Anything from “Nighttime on the Isthmus” to the Charlie Tuna show. Recently I’ve received a bunch of AFRS RP/RU/RL transcriptions and airchecks from the 1940s-1960s.  I’m always interested in trading and borrowing more of these.  Somehow I’d like to find a way to make them more readily available.  If you have any recordings of the AFRTS-LA jocks (Charlie Tuna, Wolfman Jack, Jim Pewter, Roger Carroll or any of the rest) please let me know.   If you were overseas in any other country and made recordings of your AFRTS station please let me know.  The same recordings went to SCN in Panama and AFKN in Korea, SEB in Italy, AFN in Europe and the rest of the countries where US forces were stationed.  Many of the SCN military broadcasters worked at other times at other AFRTS stations.  Let’s share some memories.

Pop quiz!  How many can you name?

The majority of the hours of programming at SCN radio came from radio transcriptions recorded primarily by the top Los Angeles DJs.  AFRTS sent these albums out until 1994 when they were replaced by satellite feeds of US network radio.

In the “glory days”, hours would be blocked and there was something for everybody…usually at a really inconvenient time.  For a lot of the troops we had the opportunity to provide entertainment they’d never heard back at home.

We owe a lot of thanks to these guys..
